From SHD roots grows Warm Notice & The Weird Weather Network

Hello,

I’ve reunited with some of the comedians behind the viral impact of Shit Harper Did to launch a new comedy project about the climate crisis: The Weird Weather Network. You can watch the first teaser below.

We’ve got a creative plan to force politicians to stop handing fossil fuel corporations billions of our tax dollars every year. Together we can help these politicians get a new hobby, like watercolours, or not giving our money away to some of the richest companies in the world.

In 2011 my cousin Sheila in the Philippines lost her home in a climate disaster that killed over 1200 people. That’s why I’ve dedicated most of my adult life to climate organizing. For decades climate activists and scientists have been trying to inspire a movement with math about carbon emissions and frankly, it has not worked. Who has time to ponder pollution statistics when you’re busy pawning your wedding ring so you can afford to buy a carton of eggs and a cabbage?

Here is the kind of math that everyone can wrap their head around: Last year the Canadian government gave away $18.6 billion CAD of your tax dollars as support for the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries. [1] To be fair, the oil and gas industry really needs these handouts because…

*checks numbers*

They’ve been making $2.8 billion (USD) in pure profit - every day for 50 years....

Wait WTF!?

The global total captured by petrostates and fossil fuel companies since 1970 is $52 Trillion USD. [2] (Is there a word for wanting to vomit and cry at the same time?)

Dirty fuel subsidies are a scam. Ending them might sound ambitious, but it’s actually not. In 2009, the G20 leaders, which included all the world’s major economies, called for a phase out of inefficient fossil fuel subsidies in all countries. [3] So why hasn’t it happened yet? Well first and foremost, nobody really talks about it.

So I’ve founded a new content studio called WARM NOTICE and teamed up with some of Canada’s most brilliant comedic talent. This summer we filmed over 90 videos to put this issue on the agenda. In January 2025 we’ll be officially launching this project, but we wanted to give you a sneak preview. With your support we’ve made an outsized impact before and we’re getting ready to do it again.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What’s the point of creating a content studio (Warm Notice)?
Thanks to supporters like you, SHD reached millions. In 2015, the 9 year reign of the climate-denying Harper Conservatives finally ended, in part thanks to an unprecedented increase in youth voting. For 4 years SHD was a prominent part of a broad progressive movement that turned out a huge wave of youth voters. However, it wasn’t without sacrifice. The government launched politically motivated false tax assessments to deplete our resources and strain our mental health (You can read more about that here). Warm Notice has been structured with long-term sustainability in mind and with a legal structure that makes it harder for crooked politicians to mess with us.

What have you been doing since SHD ended in 2015?
I’ve continued to develop my craft as a political comedian: releasing a Juno-nominated stand-up album, performing sets on TV (here and here) and working as a Consulting Producer on the satirical blockbuster Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm. However, the climate crisis has remained my top priority. Since 2016 I’ve made two feature films with climate disaster survivors in my Mother’s region of the Philippines (When The Storm Fades and Asog) . I’ve spent years working in communities on the devastating frontline of climate destabilization. At times it has been harrowing, but it has also been a source of profound joy. I’ve learned a lot through this work and am excited to apply it with Warm Notice.

Who do I contact if I have questions about this project?
You can contact our Outreach Manager, Em Cooper (they/them). They manage the hello[at]warmnotice[dot]com email inbox and are the go-to person for finding answers to your questions about the project, email subscription issues and donor support. They work part time on Pacific Time and will be happy to get back to you during weekdays just as soon as they can.
